Telecoms mast and tower inspection by drone in the North East

Close-up imagery of antennas, mounts, feeders and fixings, captured from the air. A drone mast inspection gives engineers and site owners a clear record of the structure without a climb for the survey itself.

What it is

What a drone mast inspection involves

The drone flies a controlled pattern around the structure, capturing overview images of each face and zoom close-ups of antennas, brackets, bolts, feeders and steelwork. Images are organised by face and height so any item can be found quickly.

From the same visit, a 3D model of the structure can be built for audits and upgrade planning. Engineers review the images from the office and send climbers only where work is actually needed.

What is recorded

  • Antenna and dish positions and mounts
  • Brackets, bolts, clamps and fixings
  • Feeder and cable routes
  • Corrosion, paint and steelwork condition
  • Rooftop plant and equipment

Process

How the work is done

  1. ScopeStructure type, items to inspect and the operator's requirements.
  2. CoordinateAccess, exclusion zones and any power-down agreed with the operator.
  3. FlyOverview and zoom passes up every face of the structure.
  4. ReviewImages organised and issues annotated.
  5. ReportInspection report, image set and optional 3D model.
Accuracy and limitations

Detail from a safe distance

High-zoom imagery captures small items such as bolts, clamps and labels from a safe stand-off distance. Exclusion zones and any power-down requirements are agreed with the site operator before the flight.

What affects the result

  • Agreed stand-off distances from live antennas
  • Wind at height
  • Light on each face of the structure
  • Access to a safe take-off point
Questions

Mast inspection questions

Do the antennas need to be switched off?

It depends on the site and the operator's safety rules. Stand-off distances and any power-down requirements are agreed with the operator in advance.

Can you inspect rooftop sites?

Yes. Rooftop equipment, fixings and the roof around them are inspected in the same way, with the building owner's permission.

Can you produce a 3D model of the mast?

Yes. A 3D model can be built from the same visit for audits and upgrade planning.

3D modelling and inspection
Can you inspect several sites in one trip?

Yes. Sites can be grouped and inspected on consecutive visits, which keeps the cost per site down.
